On the slopes
Ten rules that keep you in one piece
The International Ski Federation's code of conduct, in plain English. It applies on every slope in the world.
- Look out for others. Ski in a way that puts nobody at risk.
- Control your speed. Match it to your ability, the slope, the snow and how busy it is.
- The skier ahead has priority. If you're coming from behind, choose a line that keeps clear of them.
- Overtake with room to spare. Above or below, left or right, but leave plenty of space.
- Look uphill before you set off. When joining a slope or starting again after a stop, check what's coming.
- Don't stop in narrow spots or where you can't be seen. If you fall, clear the slope quickly.
- Keep to the side going up. If you climb or walk down, stay at the edge of the slope.
- Respect the signs and markings. A closed slope is closed for a reason.
- Help at an accident. Stop, make the spot safe and call 112 or Mountain Rescue.
- Witness or involved, leave your details. They matter to the people who are hurt.
